Vaga nuo ištakų iki Tverų sureguliuota, 1 m pločio, toliau paplatėja iki 6-10 m, žemupyje iki 10-15 m. Vidutinis gylis 0,5 m, giliausia vieta (2 m) prie Labardžių. Upėvardis kildinamas iš žodžių aitrus, aitra („kartumas, didelis užsidegimas, noras, patrakimas“), kurio pirminė reikšmė galimai buvusi „smarkumas, sraunumas“.
