Virvytės ištakomis laikoma vieta Šilalės rajone, 3 km į rytus nuo Laukuvos. Ten upelis teka į šiaurę per Paršežerį, Sietuvų vardu – iki Lūksto, nuo Lūksto iki Biržulio ežero vadinama Varnele. Tikroji Virvytė išteka iš Biržulio ežero ir teka Telšių rajonu į šiaurę, vėliau – į šiaurės rytus. Žemupyje teka Mažeikių rajono teritorija. Prie Gyvolių įteka į Ventą (224 km nuo jos žiočių).\n\nSlėnio plotis aukštupyje 50-60 m, o žemupyje išplatėja iki 800 m. Vaga labai vingiuota, jos plotis nuo 4-12 m aukštupyje ir vidurupyje, iki 30 m žemupyje.
