The most extreme river in Lithuania
Do you know which is the most extreme river in Lithuania?
Many people probably associate kayaking with water gently lapping against the bottom of your kayak, tranquillity, and harmony with nature. However, this is not always the case. When paddling down extreme rivers, your adrenaline really kicks in, and the river’s sudden bends become a real physical challenge. Today we’re going to tell you about the most extreme river in Lithuania – the Žvelsa.

Description of the Žvelsa
The Žvelsa is a river in western Lithuania; it is a left-bank tributary of the Minija. The Žvelsa is 38 km long, with a catchment area of 144 km². The river rises in Rietavas Municipality, in the Dausynai Forest, within the Aukštojo Tyro Telmological Reserve, and winds its way through the territories of Plungė and Klaipėda districts before finally flowing into the Minija near Žvelsėnai. The river’s discharge is 1.87 cm³/km.
Origin of the name
The name ‘Žvelsa’ is associated with the words ‘žvilti’ (‘to glisten’) and ‘žvalus’ (‘lively, nimble’).
The upper reaches of the river, up to Didieji Mostaičiai, are known as the Žvizdre.

When is the best time to go kayaking?
The river’s water level is variable, so for most of the year the river is not navigable. During a rainy autumn or in spring, when the snow melts, the Žvelsa swells and becomes a true mountain river, attracting the most daring of water travellers. For those seeking the most thrilling experiences, the Upemis.lt team recommends paddling at this time of year.
A unique river
It is hard to find a river in Lithuania quite like the Žvelsa.
The Žvelsa is characterised by a multitude of obstacles: rapids, gorges, rocks, fallen trees and beaver dams. The river is also very winding. The Žvelsa has the steepest average gradient in Lithuania, reaching as much as 2.68 m/km.
Some kayak hire companies offer specialised white-water kayaks exclusively for the Žvelsa.
The length of the routes on the Žvelsa is only up to 14 km. However, don’t be fooled by the short distance – the routes on the Žvelsa will take far more out of you than a trip down a calm river.

Are you ready to paddle down the Žvelsa?
We recommend that only travellers with extensive kayaking experience paddle down the Žvelsa. We do not recommend paddling with children.
