Prasideda Venių apylinkėse (Kelmės rajonas), 10 km į pietvakarius nuo Užvenčio. Iš pradžių teka į šiaurės rytus; maždaug nuo Ventos-Dubysos kanalo teka į šiaurę per Kuršėnus (Šiaulių rajonas); kiek aukščiau Papilės, priartėjus prie Šiaulių-Mažeikių geležinkelio, pasuka į šiaurės vakarus, teka per Papilę (Akmenės rajonas), Viekšnius, Mažeikius. Nuo Leckavos, upe 3 km nustatyta Lietuvos ir Latvijos valstybės siena. Toliau Venta teka per Latviją į šiaurę ir šiaurės vakarus. Kuldygoje ant Ventos upės yra plačiausias Europoje krioklys (aukštis 2 m).
